To become a marriage and family therapist, one should complete an entry-level education (high school diploma or GED or its equivalent) before enrolling in a four-year bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, sociology or related field. One should graduate from a two to three year master’s degree program that is accredited by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Following the completion of 2 years master’s degree, the candidate should pursue two years of clinical supervision. Alternatively, one can pursue a post-doctoral program also. The Marriage and family therapy program curriculum can include formal coursework and practicum courses or clinical internship. The state certification can be obtained by passing a state-recognized certification exam, National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), officially conducted by the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards.
