On successful completion of 2 year surgical technologist program accredited by the CAAHEP, the candidate should obtain the program completion certificate or diploma. However, some programs are just part of collegiate degree programs. One should gain knowledge about the sterilization process, surgical instruments, and become fully aware of the standards of the Association of Peri-Operative Registered Nurses (AORN). The candidate can then obtain certification from various organizations such as the Central Service/Sterile Processing and Distribution (CS/SPD) certification from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, or the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation Central Sterile Certification or the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materials Management.

Sterile processing technician training

To become a sterile processing technician, one should complete an entry-level education (high school diploma or its equivalent) and enroll in associate’s degree program at a technical school or community college and the U.S. military that usually lasts for about 2 years. The 2 year allied health program includes attending lectures and clinical training sessions for a duration of 1 year in a hospital. The Sterile processing technology program or surgical technologist program should be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Most of the sterile processing technicians aspire to become surgical technologists and they often require further education and training from a specialized vocational program.

Sterile processing technician job description

Sterile processing technicians, also called as surgical technologists, are the healthcare professionals who work as part of the operation theater team. Sterile processing technicians operate the sterilizing equipment called as autoclave that sterilizes the surgical instruments, gloves, needles including the equipment used in Operation Theater. Sterile processing technicians are responsible for arranging the surgical equipment including the drape material, arranging the operating room equipment including the medical consumables and supplies. The job of a sterile processing technician includes checking, assembling, and adjusting the medical tools to ensure that the surgical devices are functioning well.

    I work in Maine as a sterile processing tech (I’m the “Dishwasher”) and I make about $12.00/hour. Our surgical techs make maybe $15-16.00/hour
