Followed by the diploma, a dialysis technician should obtain the certification from the national organizations such as National Nephrology Certification organization (NCCO) and Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology (BONENT). Alternately, the candidate can also obtain a state licensure and receive the national certificate.

An aspiring hemodialysis technician should complete a training program that is mainly focused on anatomy and physiology, assessment of a patient, CPR, and first aid. The candidate should undergo an appropriate supervised training program to perform venipuncture, prepare prescriptions, operate and fix the dialysis equipment, monitor the patient’s condition during the procedure under the physician’s supervision. This is followed by about 2 to 4 years of dialysis lab experience to become a well-trained dialysis technician.

A hemodialysis technician is a trained medical technician who assists the physicians while performing dialysis (process of removing waste products by purifying the renal blood flow). The dialysis is performed in kidney patients with impaired kidney function, drug overdose and in patients with other peritoneal conditions. The job of a hemodialysis is to monitor the patient’s condition, operate various dialysis units while performing various procedures like hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, drug overdose, and plasmaphoresis. The dialysis technician sets various protocols to evaluate the equipment, instructs the patients during the procedure, maintains the dialysis machines, monitors the patient’s vital signs and records the findings in a medical report.
