    Dietetic technician educational requirements

    Dealing with health affairs of individuals requires great knowledge on matters with nutrition and diet and as such the dietetic technician must have achieved certain academic qualifications to operate as an expert. The technician needs to first complete college level dietetic technician education in a recognized and accredited institution offering diet education. Successful completion of the education gives the technician opportunity to obtain a license for operation which is widely required in employment sites and the license can only be obtained having passed the CDR Dietetic examinations.

    Dietetic technician duties and responsibilities

    Wide variety of functions can be played by dietetic technicians. These duties depend with the place where they are employed. Technicians employed at food companies are mandated to oversee sanitation in such places and food safety practices and ensure that they are adhered to.  They also develop menus, carry out nutrition analysis on foods and develop food labels based on nutritional content of the food. In health clubs, the dietetic technicians provide education to the clients in regards to the relationship and effects of foods on health and fitness of individuals and as such they also provide advice to the best practices to be followed by clients to ensure they achieve healthy and nutritious feeding.

    Dietetic technicians employed at community health programs are charged with the responsibility of developing of curriculum for nutrition and they conduct and teach in public classes matters to do with diet feeding to the members of the public. While at schools and cafeterias the technicians are mostly charged with managing food service employees to ensure sanitation is followed in preparation of food. They may help in developing food budgets purchase the food and help in preparation of such food.

    Hospitals and long term health care facilities largely require dietetic technician’s services. At these facilities, the technicians are responsible for carrying out screenings of clients to identify their nutritional need and then assist in providing medical nutrition therapy to clients who are in need of the same.

    Dietetic technicians basing on their job scope require peculiar skills that can help ensure effective service delivery and efficiency in their duties and such vital skills are teaching and instructing skills since they are charged with giving instructions to clients of different age and status. They also need to have proper coordination and problem identification and solving skills. Active listening and monitoring and assessment skills are also paramount.
