    It is optional for biomedical technicians to obtain certification however one can obtain the certificate in order to increase the job opportunity. On successful completion of 2 year biomedical technology program from an accredited school, the candidate should pass the exams conducted by the Board of Examiners for Biomedical Equipment Technicians before obtaining the certificate. There are various associations that offer certification for biomedical technicians like Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) which offers 3 specialty certificates like Certified Radiology Equipment Specialists (CRES), Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET), and Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist (CLEB).

    To become a biomedical technician, one should complete an entry-level education (high school diploma or its equivalent) and enroll in an associate’s degree program in biomedical engineering or biomedical equipment technology or electronics. Alternately, the education requirement varies for a biomedical technician based on the level of degree as those who operate less-complicated equipment like electric wheelchairs, and hospital beds require on-the-job training. In contrary, those who work on sophisticated equipment like lung defibrillators and CAT scanners often require a bachelor’s degree. In addition, one should obtain a four year bachelor’s degree from a college or university to work as biomedical supervisor or manager.
