Excellent time management skills and stress management techniques will help a technician to manage the workload. A BMET should possess an unlimited deal of stamina because they will have to be in awkward positions for long works while working with machines. Along with these versatile skills, they should also have the necessary academic skills which can be gained only through college/school education.

  • Biomedical equipment technician educational requirements

    A biomedical equipment technician job requires completion of a two year degree program in biomedical technology or associated fields such as electronics engineering. However, most of the employers give importance to work experience than advance education, but an associate degree in the field is mostly required. Before enrolling in any training program related to biomedical equipment study, it is essential to choose a college which is accredited by the American Board for engineering and technology. Such programs project a high commitment to the quality of preparing students for becoming successful professionals. Even if BMET’s have acquired higher education, they should continually update their knowledge and skills because the technology advances quickly.

    All the BMET training programs include training along with theory classes by cooperating with biomedical equipment manufacturing companies and hospitals. While bachelor degree programs and associate degree programs are available for BMET’s, some ex-military people can also have equivalent knowledge if they have gained relevant informal training in the field.

    There are two kind of degree programs: Biomedical Engineering Technology Bachelor of Science and Biomedical Electronics Technology Associate of Applied Science. The former degree program is for those who wishes to take a major in biomedical equipment engineering where they will learn more about the various equipments like vital imaging equipments, monitoring the machinery and its maintenance, biomechanics, physiology and anatomy. Whereas Biomedical Electronics Technology Associate of Applied Science focus mainly on technical mathematics and physics where students learn about solid state electronics and its digital form. The students will gain knowledge about various digital technology, computer systems, and microprocessors and will learn about each and every single piece of the biomedical equipment and its maintenance. It is basically a 2 year degree program.

    Biomedical equipment technician license and certifications

    There are a number of certifications, which are offered to biomedical equipment technicians who need it. Certification is not necessarily required, but it makes a technician more desirable when he appears for a job interview. Technicians who prefer to work in supervisory roles must be certified. The association for the advancement of medical instrumentation is the board which gives certification to all BMET’s. The following certifications are available for BMET’S: Certified Radiology Equipment Specialist,Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist, Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician and Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist. Educational requirements every technician should possess in order to appear for certification programs are an associate or bachelor’s degree or training in military forces with an experience of more than 3 years. Along with all these requirements, membership in Medical equipment and technology association is always an added advantage.
