    How to become a medical technologist

    Medical technologist aspirants have 2 basic options to become one. Bachelor’s degree in medical technology is the minimum requirement. The other option is the Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, biochemistry or biology. Those employed as medical technician can also become medical technologists after the completion the appropriate supplementary formal training.

    For those already having bachelor’s degrees but having no medical technology major, they must complete the 12 to 18 months educational requirements. After completion they will earn the Medical Laboratory Technology Certificate of Proficiency (MLTCP). This course covers clinical chemistry, microbiology, phlebotomy, clinical laboratory instrumentation, parasitology, and diagnostic immunology.  Licensing varies from state to state. There are states that require passing one or a couple of examinations. You can have the information on your state’s requirements from your state’s health departments.

    It is best for medical technologists to be certified by professional associations such as the American Medical Technologists to be in the best position to land a job. Other agencies that are nationally recognized to accredit medical technology courses are the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), and the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). Medical technologists are required by the American Medical Technologists to have at least 45 education credits within a 3 year period as continuing education requirements. Other states mandate up to 15 units of continuing education to retain the license in medical technology. The continuing education is either shouldered or reimbursed by the company of employment so medical technologists do not have to worry about the expenses.

    The American Medical Technologists (AMT) offers scholarship for 5 deserving aspiring medical technologist for $500 each year. The $500 can only be used for defraying tuition cost and will directly be given to the scholar’s school of choice. The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) also offers scholarships annually for deserving students who have attained a level of success that deserves appreciation.
