I am an ophthalmology resident. It takes at least 12 years past high school to become an ophthalmologist. 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, and 4 years of residency- longer if you chose to specialize.

Opthamologist make upward of 600k in Canada. I’m not sure where they get their facts in this article….but I assure you…the salary is among the highest in all areas of medicine.
Docs are paid a salary by a hospital…and then an EXTRA salary in private practice doing procedures like laser eye surgery…it’s a good job…not a ton of on call hours…and most weekends and evenings off. In the spectrum of physician work…it’s a GREAT gig!!
Education needed:undergrad (3-4yrs), med school(4 yrs), residency and fellowship (4-6 yrs). This is the AVERAGE for MOST medical specialties.

I want to be an ophthalmologist, and wanted to know: Would being self-employed affect the salary at all? Also, is there a reason that gender affects how much you make?
