How to become a Substance abuse counselor
To become a substance abuse counselor, the candidate should first complete a GED or high school diploma and an entry level education by completing Master’s program from an accredited university. One should first complete a Bachelor’s degree in substance abuse counseling and then complete a supervised clinical practice or internship as part of the graduation prerequisite. The college coursework focuses on subjects such as group counseling, pharmacology and psychopharmacology, psychological evaluation, treatment planning, counseling and sociology of addiction, family counseling, chemical dependency diagnosis, relapse prevention, side effects of chronic drug therapy, drug prevention and treatment, emotionally destructive outcome on substance abusers and their families, addiction statistics and research. For certification or state licensing purpose, one should complete master’s degree.
