How to become a medical coder
To become a medical coder, the candidate should first complete an entry level education of GED or high school diploma in courses such as math, computer science, health, and biology. One should then complete a two year Associate’s degree and gain minimum 2 years of experience in medical coding or records in CPT and ICD coding systems. One can also complete a Postsecondary certificate as well. Ensure that an associate’s degree program in health information technology is fully accredited. The program typically focuses on the subjects such as anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, classification and coding systems, health data requirements and standards, healthcare statistics, healthcare reimbursement methods, and computer systems. Upon successful completion of an accredited health information technology program, one qualifies for a state board exam. Several organizations offer certificates for medical coders upon completion of an exam, Certified Professional Coder exam officially conducted by the AAPC. One should gain enough experience in medical coding before obtaining certifications such as the Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) and Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
